Drill of the month

As we move from indoors to outdoors, many vaulters will have trouble with their approach and plant. Here's what you can do to minimize this problem: build a sliding box.

Make a wooden "box" roughly the size of the planting box. Use 2X4 on end for the side rails, a 6" piece of 4X4 for the end, and a piece of plywood for the base. (The thicker the plywood, the heavier the box.) Screw it all together (nails tend to pop out).

Have your vaulters do full approaches with their regular pole working on a tall plant and an aggressive jump off the ground. If the vaulter resists, the box will slide. If the vaulter collapses his arms at the plant, he'll end up on his back on the track. (If the box is too heavy, put some sand on the track under the box to help it slide a bit more easily.)

Vaulters can take many approaches with the sliding box. They can do this every day. This drill teaches the vaulter to run fast, push the pole up at the plant, and to jump off the ground. The vaulter does not swing through with this drill.
