Drill of the month

A Frame

A great takeoff drill is the A Frame drill. Take two 14' or longer poles and tape them together a foot or so from the top. Stick the ends into the sand of the long jump pit about 5 or 6 feet apart.

The vaulter takes a short (2 left) approach and jumps up and graps the two poles (one with each hand) as high as they can. Staying in an upright position, the vaulter then swings into the sand. The vaulter does NOT swing up. They stay in that long, tall takeoff position landing with their takeoff leg bent to 90 degrees at the knee and the trail leg extended long. (This is the same drill long jumpers use to work on their takeoff. We've just added poles to jump up and grab on to.)
